My research project seeks to better understand how cover crops affect nitrate leaching, and if this will continue with climate change. Using the lysimeter site allows me to use high frequency data to monitor the water balance, as well as taking soil solution samples from multiple depths weekly. There are ceramic heaters warming some of the lysimeters to raise the average surface temperature to match climate change predictions. Understanding how nitrate leaching will be affected by warmer weather, and cover crops ability to reduce leaching will help guide policy makers and farmers towards more sustainable agriculture.
