My doctoral research focuses on soil organic matter and seeks to address three broad concerns: 1) mechanisms of soil organic matter stabilization and how they determine the impact of different agricultural practices on soil organic matter; 2) pathways by which soil organic matter affects crop performance, and the difference between potential and optimal soil organic matter conditions for crops; and 3) the interactions between agricultural practices and the environment that determine organic matter storage potential of soil.

As a scholar of food systems, I’m also interested in the constraints and opportunities surrounding farmer’s adoption of soil-conserving practices; how historical processes of soil degradation and restoration can inform current soil conservation efforts; and forms of the social contract between farmers and society that can enable win-win scenarios for soil and human health.
