I am researching the relationship between soil nitrous oxide production and surface flux under freeze-thaw cycles as impacted by winter warming and cover crops. This research is being completed using the lysimeters located at the Soil Health Interpretive Centre. Using a variety of automatic chambers, soil gas lances and probes we are able to measure the nitrous oxide surface flux, soil gas concentration and content. The aim of this research is to determine how soil nitrous oxide production patterns during freeze-thaw cycles are altered by increasing winter temperatures and the use of cover crops. By understanding how these factors alter nitrous oxide production the accuracy of nitrous oxide emissions during freeze-thaw cycles and greenhouse gas budgets can be improved.
